97 freshmen in international relations at Georgetown University

November 14, 2025

In a ceremony marked by the features of luxury and dazzling, Georgetown University in Qatar welcomed a number of newly admitted students on the day of the Georgetown Ambassadors Program, where 97 students from among the accepted students in the class of 2027 joined, either in person or online, to start shaping the sense of community and prepare them for a successful university experience.

This program is designed to deliver the unique higher education mission of Georgetown and Qatar Foundation, and to give students and their families an insight into the Georgetown experience. As part of this event, students communicated with academic advisors to learn about the university’s resources and capabilities, and to learn about the various clubs, societies and activities available to them. They also met other new students, fostering connections that would last throughout their time at the university.

About this day, says Dr. Safwan Al-Masry, Dean of Georgetown University in Qatar: “It was great meeting the newly joined students as they prepared to begin their university life at GU-Q. By offering numerous resources, opportunities, and mentorship, our students have the tools to pursue their passions and shape their future”. This year’s activities, which took place during the month of Ramadan, included an Iftar banquet that gave attendees the opportunity to share a meal with deans, staff, and current students, as well as random sessions, during which attendees could drink coffee and tea, chat with members of the Georgetown family, and enjoy activities specially prepared for this gathering.

For a variety of accepted students living abroad, the activities of this Welcome Program started the day before with a private online dialogue between them. The purpose of the three-way dialogue was to allow newly admitted students to network with each other and get to know current GU-Q students, to provide a better understanding of the GU-Q undergraduate program, to learn about international student experiences and support services available, and to welcome them into the Georgetown family.

Joseph Hernandez, director of admissions at Georgetown University in Qatar, says: “We know that the transition to university life can be daunting, and we want to ensure that our students feel safe and supported as they begin this new chapter in their lives, and this festive day is just one of the many ways in which we demonstrate our commitment to helping and supporting students to succeed”. Georgetown University in Qatar prepares students for a variety of careers in international relations by providing a four-year humanities education with a focus on international affairs.

After completing the interdisciplinary core curriculum during the first two years of study, students have options to enroll in one of the four majors awarded: International Economics, International Politics, Culture, Politics, and International History.
