The median level of approval of Russian leaders in 137 countries fell from 33% in 2021 to 21% in 2022 – this is the absolute minimum for the entire research period since 2007, derives from investigation American Gallup Organization. The maximum level of approval of Russian leaders was recorded in 2020 – 34%.
The largest proportion of respondents who do not approve of the activities of the Russian authorities are found in Norway, Sweden, Ukraine and Poland. Among European and CIS countries, the smallest proportion of respondents with a negative attitude towards Russian leaders is found in Serbia (24%), Kyrgyzstan (30%), Azerbaijan (46%) and Montenegro (49%).
The smallest proportion of respondents with a negative attitude towards Russia among 137 countries are found in Sierra Leone, Malaysia, Ethiopia and Uzbekistan.
In some countries considered friendly or neutral to Russia, a high percentage of respondents disapprove of Moscow’s activities. These are Brazil (75%), Argentina (68%), Pakistan (63%), Turkey (55%) and Iran (46%).
This is an unexpected result, given that previous surveys of Western sociologists noted that, for example, nearly 70% of respondents in Turkey see Russia as a necessary ally or partner. These data are presented in a public opinion survey conducted in December 2022 – January 2023 jointly by YouGov and Datapraxis. According to the same study, 51% of Indian respondents consider Russia an ally, 29% consider it a necessary partner. At the same time, a Gallup study revealed that 46% of Indians have a negative attitude towards Russian leaders.
Gallup is an American sociological research organization. The surveys were conducted from June to September 2022 using the method of personal and telephone interviews, the sample in each country was around 1,000 people. Gallup publishes government approval ratings surveys every year.
