Lahore: Anti-corruption and police officers in Pakistan raided the residence of former chief minister of Punjab province in Pakistan, Chaudhary Pervez Elahi late on Friday night in his Lahore residence. The raiding team, meanwhile, used an armored vehicle to break open the main gate of Elahi’s Gulberg residence and arrested 12 people from the house, mostly his staff. Women police officers also detained some women. Police officers thoroughly searched Elahi’s house, but Elahi could not be found. They also tried to barge into the adjacent residence of PML-Q president Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain, but were resisted by Mr. Shujaat’s sons.
The search operation continued till 2 am on Saturday and the police failed to nab Elahi. The Anti-Corruption Foundation said its Gujranwala team had reached Mr Elahi’s house to arrest him in a corruption case. On the other hand, Elahi’s legal team said that his pre-arrest bail till May 6 has already been taken from a court. The ACE team insisted that Elahi was needed in a new case and they would not leave without arresting the PTI leader.
Elahi’s lawyers assured the ACE officials about the bail. On the other hand, Elahi’s son Moonis Elahi tweeted that ‘Punjab Police is currently at our residence to arrest my father in the case for which he got bail today. His bail hearing was covered by all media outlets. He said that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is absolutely right, the rule of law has ended in Pakistan.
PTI chief Imran Khan tweeted on Saturday midnight, “Strongly condemn the illegal raid on Parvez Elahi’s house with no respect for the women present and family members.” We are seeing the end of democracy in Pakistan before our eyes. There is no respect for the Constitution, Supreme Court judgments or fundamental rights of the people – there is only Jungle Raj. ,
