A statement issued by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said today, Sunday, that “Jordan will host tomorrow, Monday, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of of Iraq and the Arab Republic of Egypt with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic.”
A spokesman for the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Sinan Majali, said the meeting was a follow-up to the consultative meeting of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, Jordan, Iraq and the United States. Egypt, which was hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. in Jeddah on April 14, 2023, and to build on the contacts that these countries have established with the Syrian government and within the framework of its proposals, and the Jordanian initiative to achieve a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement following the informal consultative meeting in Jeddah of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, during which points views were exchanged on a number of issues and developments in the region.
According to the statement released by the Jeddah meeting:
They consulted and exchanged views on efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that would end all its repercussions and preserve Syria’s unity, security, stability and Arab identity, and restore it to its Arab environment, in a way that benefits its brotherly people. The ministers stressed that the political solution is the only solution to the Syrian crisis, and the importance of having an Arab leadership role in the efforts to end the crisis, to put in place the necessary mechanisms for this role and to intensify consultations among Arab countries to ensure the success of these efforts. Ministers agreed on the importance of resolving the humanitarian crisis, creating an enabling environment for aid to reach all regions of Syria, creating the conditions for the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons to their regions, ending their suffering, allowing them to return safely to their homeland, and taking more steps that would help stabilize the situation throughout Syria. The ministers stressed the importance of the fight against terrorism in all its forms and organisations, the fight against smuggling and drug trafficking, and the importance of state institutions preserving Syria’s sovereignty over its territory in order to an end to the presence of armed militias on the spot and to external interference in Syrian internal affairs.
