The Sudanese conflict is tearing apart the dreams of Egyptian students. The story of injury and return

Under the barrage of mutual bombardment between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, the friends of the student, Mahmoud, took the initiative to transfer him to a hospital in Khartoum to save their colleague, whose wound affected the spinal cord, to undergo urgent surgery to fix the spine.

A scene was repeated with fellow engineering student Mai Awad, who was residing in Khartoum with her brothers and was injured by shrapnel in the leg. Her mother, who resides in the United States, was heartbroken and her only concern was saving her daughter and evacuating her to Egypt as soon as possible.

Two humanitarian cases received special attention from the Egyptian Ministry of Immigration, which coordinated intensively with the relevant agencies to evacuate them by air on board an Egyptian Armed Forces helicopter, before they are transferred directly to an Egyptian hospital for treatment.

Health and psychological care

Egyptian Immigration Minister Ambassador Suha Gendi confirmed that student Mahmoud and student Mai are receiving necessary health care and their health condition is being monitored 24 hours a day, noting that their condition is now more stable.

The immigration minister said the two injured students were taken on an evacuation plane from Port Sudan, and there was also communication and coordination with the Egyptian Red Crescent, which received the two students on their arrival at the Egyptian border.

Heliopolis Hospital Director Ahmed El-Khouly said student Mai’s condition was stable and doctors were working to provide psychological support to her and her brothers in return after what they suffered, indicating that an entire emergency service was allocated to the returnees from Sudan, in addition to coordination with psychiatric consultants to mitigate the impact of the trauma, and what they saw tragedies during the current war, to feel safe in their country.

Doctor Muhammad Wahib, Professor of Orthopedics overseeing Mai’s treatment, confirmed the continued immediate follow-up of the case, explaining that the condition is good and will improve further in a short time, while Doctor Muhammad Reda, Professor of Mental and Neurological Illnesses, works to prepare the student psychologically before performing the required surgery.

Egyptian return attempts

The Minister of Immigration added that great efforts have been made since the beginning of the events to return the Egyptians who are in Sudan through the various ports, whether land ports or air ports, noting that up to now there is ongoing coordination for the return of Egyptians from Qastal Pass, Arqin Pass and Port Sudan.

Ambassador Suha Gendy, Minister of State for Immigration and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad, commended the efforts of Egyptian students in Sudan and representatives of the Dialogue Center of the Ministry of Immigration, for their concern permanent and continuous coordination to evacuate students to Sudan during the current events. , and also the coordination to evacuate patients, the elderly and families from different places as a first priority, as students of the members of the Department of Immigration Center for Dialogue, the last of the missing from Sudan. Ambassador Suha Jundi continued that since the outbreak of the crisis, she immediately held a virtual meeting with more than 100 Egyptian students in Sudan, and a number of parents to listen to them and check their situation in light of the state of turmoil in the sister country.

The number of people evacuated from Sudan by land and air since the start of the crisis until Sunday evening reached 6,960 Egyptians out of the 10,000 Egyptians who constitute the force of the Egyptian community there.

Regarding the future of returning students and the end of their studies, the Minister of Immigration confirmed that the government is studying all scenarios and alternatives, and that there is a national committee that is concerned about this, to work out all the proposals that can be implemented for the future of students returning to study in Sudan.
