May 2, 2023

In the forties of the 20th century, cinematographic activity developed in Egypt and the names of cinema pioneers emerged, especially in production. Prominent women have helped to present women’s issues and concerns as topics of public discussion through distinguished cinematic works.

The film “Laila” was the first full-fledged Egyptian film shown in 1927, produced by the pioneer of the Egyptian film industry, Aziza Amir.

The list of pioneers of Egyptian cinema includes many names, such as Aziza Amir, Bahija Hafez, Asia Dagher and Mary Queeni.

Dagher has been described as the “woman of iron”, having produced around 50 films for Egyptian cinema and winning numerous awards.

Egyptian actress Bushra told “Sky News Arabia” that Egyptians are proud that the first nucleus of cinema in Egypt is behind women.

Egyptian cinema occupied a prominent place on the international scene, and its stars won numerous awards, whether at the level of interpretation or production.

In this regard, Spanish actress Coca Escrapiano said, “I know that Egyptian cinema has a long history, just like Indian cinema does, but unfortunately very few Egyptian films reach us.”

And she added: “Let me add something that I knew here in Egypt, that the role of women in the beginning of Egyptian cinema was great, but in Spain, fifty years ago, the percentage of participation of women in the Spanish film industry may not have exceeded ten percent.”
