“However long it takes. That’s how long we’ll support Ukraine,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter after a phone call with Zelenskyy.
He addressed the Ukrainian President saying, “I promise you that,” adding that “Canada will continue its presence there with its military, humanitarian and financial assistance.”
Zelenskyy also tweeted that he and Trudeau had discussed establishing a “long-term program of defense cooperation” between the two countries.
Canadian support for Ukraine in the face of Russia
Last month, Canada sent eight Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine to help repel the Russian attack. Ottawa announced earlier in February that it would double the number of tanks promised to Kyiv. In March, Trudeau announced that Canada would extend the training mission for Ukrainian combat engineers until October, adding that medical trainers would also be deployed. Ottawa has allocated more than C$1 billion in military aid to Ukraine over the past year, including armored vehicles, surface-to-air missiles, howitzers and ammunition, as well as Leopard tanks.
