Doctor and popular Alexander Myasnikov said that new cases of diphtheria infection are increasingly being recorded in Russia. According to him, the mass vaccination of the population, which almost 100 years ago, made it possible to almost completely eliminate the disease.
In an interview with Narodnye Novosti, general practitioner, immunologist Irina Yartseva explained the reason for the spread of a dangerous infection in Russia and who would be at risk.
The specialist says that diphtheria manifests like any cold: there is a severe sore throat and a change in voice. A characteristic plaque is fixed in the throat, which only a doctor can determine. It is almost impossible to do it on your own. A person without medical training is unlikely to be able to recognize the disease.
“Because a certain film forms on the throat. In the case of diphtheria, you can just suffocate, because this film is so tight and thick that it simply blocks the airways,” Yartseva said.
She says the only option to prevent diphtheria is vaccination. There is simply no other way to escape it.
Previously it was known that most often the disease is fixed in the Novosibirsk region.
