Doctors examined the symptoms of 5,075 people with early colon cancer who were diagnosed before the age of 50.
The scientists found the symptoms to be persistent and normal, and included iron deficiency anemia, pallor under the lower eyelid, or unusually pale or yellow skin.
It’s important not to think of colon cancer as just a disease of the elderly, said Dr. Yin Cao, a surgeon at the University of Washington. “We want young adults to be aware of these potentially very serious signs and symptoms and act accordingly.”
Dr. Cao added, “We can diagnose the disease earlier, which can reduce the need for more aggressive treatment and improve patients’ quality of life and survival rates.”
