Berlin officially allowed the carrying of Ukrainian flags on May 9, reversing the previously introduced ban. This is according to an article published Friday in the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
As the authors of the material write, the administrative court in Berlin allowed the use of Ukrainian flags when visiting memorials to Soviet soldiers in the parks of Treptower, Tiergarten and Schönholzer Heide on May 9. This decision was taken after an appeal on behalf of the Ukrainian youth association in Germany Vitsche. However, the same measure does not apply to the flags of Russia and the USSR.
“The administrative court confirmed our legal opinion: the banning of Ukrainian flags is, according to the court, clearly illegal,” attorney Patrick Heinemann said, citing the publication.
Journalists note that by banning Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian symbols, Berlin police hoped to avoid public tension on memorable dates related to the end of the Great Patriotic War.
