Rafael Grossi called for measures to be taken to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporizhia plant.
Grossi issued the warning in light of what he said were ongoing evacuations in the nearby town of Enrodar, ordered by the Russian-appointed local governor.
“The overall situation in the area near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has become very unpredictable and potentially dangerous,” Grossi said on the agency’s website.
“I am deeply concerned about the dangers the plant faces in terms of nuclear safety and security. We must act now to prevent a serious nuclear accident with repercussions for people and the environment,” he added. .
Russian forces seized the Zaporizhia station, days after Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
The firefight near the station was repeated, with each side blaming the other.
Grossi visited the plant, Europe’s largest, in March as part of efforts to convince the two sides to strike a deal to operate the plant safely, and has repeatedly warned of the dangers of nearby military operations.
