US President announces extension of state of emergency in Syria

“The President will extend the state of emergency beyond May 11, 2023, and he will consider changes to Syrian government policies and procedures to determine whether to continue or end this national emergency at future,” the letter reads.

The US president has called on the Assad regime and its supporters to end its violent war against its own people, declare a nationwide ceasefire, facilitate the unimpeded delivery of aid relief to all Syrians in need and to negotiate a political settlement in Syria under the UN Security Council resolution. 2254.

Washington criticizes Arab League decision

At the same time, the United States criticized the decision of the Arab League to resume the participation of Syrian government delegations in its meetings, believing that President Bashar al-Assad does not deserve a normalization of relations following the bloody conflict.

“We don’t think Syria deserves to be returned to the Arab League at this time,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters. “We still believe that we will not normalize our relations with the Assad regime or support our allies and partners in doing so.”
