The former president said in an interview with Fox News that he would appeal the decision in the case of E. Jean Carroll, saying he had “absolutely no idea who she is”. “This verdict is a disgrace,” Trump said, “it’s the continuation of the greatest political witch hunt in history.” “We are going to appeal. The judge appointed by (Hillary) Clinton treated us very badly,” the former White House chief said. “And (Carroll) is also a Clinton man.”
“An invincible old woman” told in court of Trump’s rape and years of suffering, writes the Guardian. The jury deliberated Tuesday for less than three hours. It did not establish that Trump raped Carroll, but convicted him of assault and battery.

The verdict legally brands a former US president as a “sexual predator” for the first time, observers said. But since this is the result of a civil case, not a criminal one, the only legal penalty Trump will face is financial. Carroll, 79, will become a millionaire in his later years. The jury decided to award her about $5 million in damages and punitive damages: about $2 million for sexual assault charges and about $3 million for defamation, because Trump called her a “a liar” and called her accusations a “fraud”. The former president was ordered to pay two million dollars to the former journalist and now blogger.

Before the highly controversial verdict was read, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan warned those in the courtroom: “No shouting. No jumping. No noise outside the door.”

During the hearing, Carroll alleged that Trump raped her at the Bergdorf Goodman department store across from Trump Tower in Manhattan “in 1996.” According to Carroll, they had a chance encounter at a store where Trump was buying a present for a “girl.” She said he asked her for advice and they went shopping together before he pushed her into the dressing room and assaulted her. Trump and his legal team insist Carroll’s allegations were fabricated, with the former president’s initial reaction including accusations that the journalist was motivated by a desire to sell copies of her book. Trump attorney Joe Takopina told jurors during closing arguments on Monday that Carroll’s story was “too far-fetched to believe.” He repeated a statement saying that she, by filing a lawsuit, had reimbursed the publication costs of her 2019 memoir and claimed that she wanted to vilify Trump for political reasons.

In the Carroll case, a jury of three women and six men were persuaded by Carroll’s confident testimony over three days in court when she described a sexual assault in the dressing room of a New York City department store in 1996, note observers. Carroll described herself as “absolutely in love” with Trump’s chatter and said she was “thrilled” to go to the lingerie department with him. She told the court he “grabbed” the bodysuit and told her to try it on. “I wasn’t going to wear it. I said, ‘You’re going to wear it, it’s your color,'” she explained in court. her, she did not perceive what was going on seriously, thinking that it was all a big joke. “The mood, she said, quickly changed after they entered the dressing room. ” He immediately closed the door and pushed me against the wall. He pushed me so hard it made my head spin. I was very confused,” she said. Speaking calmly and slowly, she told the jury that Trump had raped her. This fact, despite the plaintiff’s best efforts, was not confirmed by the tribunal.
Trump’s attorney, Takopin, said he would use Carroll’s words to refute his allegations. He also said he would show how the former Elle magazine columnist conspired with friends to falsely accuse the former president. All, according to the lawyer, “hated” Trump and his policies. Trump himself did not testify in court hearings.

But after seven days of testimony, Tacopina could do neither, and the jury sided with Carroll, who convinced them that the assault rendered her incapable of having a relationship. in love. She said on the final day of the hearing that Trump had “damaged her reputation” and that Elle magazine would have fired her a few months later because of it. “I was born in 1943. I’m from the silent generation. Women like me were taught to keep their heads up and not complain. I would never call the police about something I was ashamed of .” Carroll said she kept the attack a secret for more than two decades for the same reasons. “I never intended to talk about what Donald Trump did,” she said. She said she wanted to speak out when the #MeToo movement became popular and women in the United States spoke out about sexual assault and harassment. Carroll said she considers Trump a “mean” and “terrible” president, but denied taking legal action against him because of his political views.
