To reduce the dependence of its own infrastructure on Russia, Brussels thought of laying an Internet cable from Europe to Georgia along the bottom of the Black Sea, bypassing Russian territory.
According to sources, the Europeans planned to take such a step back in 2021, but due to the special operation, these plans had to be postponed.
Cable laying is included in the program of the Global Gateway project, which is an analogue of the Chinese initiative “One Belt – One Road”. The length of the cable will be 1100 km. 45 million euros will be invested in the construction of the facility. The European Bank will allocate an additional €20 million for these purposes. At the same time, laying cables on the seabed may require additional investment, as it is very expensive and time-consuming work that lasts for several years.
Meanwhile, several important international cables pass through Russia – in particular, one of them has a length of about 8,700 km and connects Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Ukraine, China and Kazakhstan. Financially, the project is controlled by the Megafon company, which holds a majority stake in this road.
It is important to note that international internet traffic is routed primarily through undersea cables. Satellite communications are less stable and less reliable in this regard.
