Dhaka: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Bangladesh will not buy anything from countries that impose sanctions on it. The Prime Minister made the remarks while inaugurating the 60th convention of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka on Saturday, a news agency reported. The Prime Minister said that now there is a tendency to ban those people through whom we control terrorism. We have decided that we will not buy anything from those who will impose restrictions.
Hasina had earlier criticized the US sanctions on officers of Bangladesh’s special security force unit Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for alleged abuse of authority, saying the move was highly condemnable. He said the elite force has contributed immensely to the South Asian country’s efforts in containing extremism and terrorism. In December 2021, the US Treasury Department and the Department of State imposed human rights sanctions on RAB and seven of its current and former top officials.
