Truck and van collide in northern region of Mexico, 26 people killed

Mexico City: A van and a cargo truck collided on a highway in northern Mexico on Sunday, killing 26 people. The officers provided this information. Prosecutors and police in the northern border state of Tamaulipas said the vehicle towing the cargo truck was not found at the scene, suggesting the driver may have detached it from the cargo trailer and fled.

Officials said the accident happened on a highway near the state capital Ciudad Victoria and the cause was being investigated. Local media reported that many of the dead could be members of the same family who were returning from somewhere, but officials did not confirm this. Mexico has had a high number of deaths in similar accidents in the past, which have often been blamed on overcrowded vehicles linked to smuggling.
