Fire broke out in a four-storey hostel in New Zealand, many people died, more than 30 missing

Wellington: Several people have died and more than 30 are feared missing in an overnight fire that broke out at a four-storey hostel building in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington. While giving this information on Tuesday, the police said that the fire broke out at Loafers Lodge hostel on Adelaide Road in central Wellington at 12:30 midnight on Monday-Tuesday. The fire started from the top floor.

According to the preliminary assessment of the police, the exact number of dead cannot be told at the moment but it is estimated that the number of deaths is less than 10. According to the police, a total of 52 people were pulled out of the building and at least five were rescued from the roof, but others were not known. Five people were sent to the hospital, two of whom are in critical condition.

A spokesman for the fire and emergency department said about 90 people were living in the building and about 30 people were still unaccounted for after being evacuated. Speaking to the Morning News programme, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said there could be more deaths.
