Iran’s Mizan news agency said Ali Reza Enayati would be Iran’s new ambassador to Riyadh.
Enayati worked as an assistant to the foreign minister and director general for Arab Gulf affairs in the ministry, according to the Iranian justice-affiliated agency.
The appointment of the new ambassador came after the announcement of the resumption of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, a China-brokered deal that ended years of estrangement.
Restore diplomatic relations
On March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran issued a joint statement regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two sides. The agreement provided for agreeing to resume diplomatic relations between them and to reopen their embassies and representations within a maximum period of two months. The statement said both sides agreed to respect the sovereignty of states and not interfere in their internal affairs. The two sides agreed to activate the security cooperation agreement signed between them in 2001. Saudi Arabia and Iran said the deal followed an initiative by Chinese President Xi Jinping to develop good neighborly relations between the two countries. He also thanked the Sultanate of Oman for hosting the rounds of dialogue that took place between the two parties during the years 2021-2022.
