The US government has expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to secure US-supplied weapons to prevent their inadvertent use.
“The Ukrainian government has shown that it takes the responsibility for weapons safety seriously,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
Miller made this point when commenting on allegations that opponents of the Russian government used American-made equipment during their invasion of the Belgorod region this week.
“That was the subject of dialogue between the United States and Ukraine even before the conflict, when we started providing them with the necessary assistance for self-defense,” Miller said.
“We will continue to ensure that the assistance we provide to them complies with US laws and other applicable requirements,” the official added. “And we will continue to convey to the Ukrainian side what has been our very clear policy, which is that we do not encourage or support attacks outside Ukraine’s borders.”
“We will continue to have these conversations with them behind the scenes,” he said. “But, as I said, while we are studying this matter, it is not worth anticipating possible actions until we have come to a conclusion about what really happened.”
