A group of scientists from several countries was able to reconstruct the face of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, who reigned in Egypt in the 14th century BC, writing edition of the Greek Reporter.
Scientists were able to recreate the famous pharaoh’s facial features using a digital model of his mummified skull. The international team did not have access to the pharaoh’s skull, but previous studies have already recorded the smallest parameters of his skull.
Research team leader Dr Cicero Moraes said: “It was detective work in which every minute detail was combined so that ultimately we could create a three-dimensional model of the skull.
Having data on the proportions of the skull and some important cephalometric measurements, we created a so-called virtual donor.
By working with his skull in the future, we were able to make it Tutankhamun’s skull.
Additionally, according to Moraes, scientists (and the group included researchers from Brazil, Italy, and Australia) recreated the size of the lips, the position of the eyeballs, the height of the ears, and the front size of the nose of the ruler of ancient Egypt.
For this, statistical studies and the results of computed tomography of the living descendants of the indigenous population of Egypt were applied. Next, markers were applied to the skull model, indicating soft tissue thickness at various locations.
With the help of these and other methods, the appearance of the pharaoh became more and more complete. At the end of the work, subjective elements were added, such as eye color.
Speaking of the result, Moraes says: “Looking at this thin-faced young man, you see more of a student than a leader, loaded with a lot of responsibility, which makes his figure even more interesting.”
Tutankhamun (c. 1341 BC – c. 1323 BC) was the penultimate pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt. He ascended the throne at the age of nine and reigned until his death at the age of about nineteen. Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered in November 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.
