Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri stated that the US Lebanondsdsdraft negotiations were positive, stressing that the draft did not grant the Israeli forces freedom of movement in Lebanon and did not include NATO forces. Chief Advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Special Representative for Lebanon Ali Larijani announced that Iran supports the Lebanese government in the ceasefire negotiations.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nebih Berri confirmed that he had received the ceasefire proposal presented by the US, amid Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon.
According to Xinhua, In his statement yesterday, Berri stated that the negotiations regarding the proposal continued in a positive atmosphere, but he emphasized that some of the proposal articles were unacceptable to Lebanon. In particular, Berri stated that the US proposal “does not grant the Israeli forces freedom of movement on Lebanese territory” and that this was “unacceptable” for Lebanon.
Berri denied that the proposal includes giving freedom of movement for the Israeli army in Lebanon, noting that “it is unacceptable and cannot even be discussed, and we cannot accept any infringement on our sovereignty.”
According to Al-Jazeera, In a meeting with Larijani, Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged support for Lebanon’s position on implementing 1701 and called this a priority, along with halting the “Israeli aggression,” a statement from his office said.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nebih Berri also noted that the draft ceasefire did not include the deployment of NATO or similar international military forces in Lebanon, while disagreements continued over the establishment of a committee to oversee the implementation of UN resolution 1701.
Berri stated that Lebanon is open to discussions on an alternative mechanism and that there is an existing system that can be activated.
Evaluating the visit of US President Joe Biden’s Senior Advisor Amos Hochstein to Lebanon, Berri said that this visit aimed to develop and accelerate ceasefire negotiations.
According to reports in the US press, Donald Trump approved a draft that foresees a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah during his meeting with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on November 10. It was reported that Trump approved the proposal after being briefed on the draft presented by Dermer and expressed his hope that it would be implemented before he takes office on January 20, 2025.
It was learned that Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, in a meeting with Ali Larijani, the Chief Advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asked Iran to persuade Hezbollah to accept a ceasefire. Mikati was reported to have emphasized that the ceasefire should also include a withdrawal condition at the Israel-Lebanon border.
Larijani made a statement after the talks, stating that Iran would support all decisions taken by the Lebanese government and resistance groups. Larijani said, “As Iran, we do not want to deepen the conflicts or sabotage the process. We adopt a solution-oriented approach to the problems,” and underlined that they are open to diplomacy.
