The Cleveland Cavaliers are suddenly one win away from the Eastern Conference finals after surviving one of the most controversial finishes of the 2026 NBA playoffs.

Cleveland stunned the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in overtime Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena, erasing a late nine-point deficit before escaping with a pivotal Game 5 victory that left Detroit furious over a controversial no-call in the final seconds of regulation.

What should have been a celebratory night for the top-seeded Pistons instead turned into heartbreak. Detroit entered the final three minutes leading 103-94 and appeared fully in control of the series. The crowd inside Little Caesars Arena was roaring, Cade Cunningham was dominating, and the Cavaliers looked finished.

Then everything collapsed.

Cleveland’s dramatic comeback was fueled by Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Max Strus. Mobley tied the game late before the final possession produced the sequence now dominating NBA discussion across social media and sports television.

With the score tied at 103 and seconds remaining, Mitchell drove toward the basket looking for a potential game winner. Pistons wing Ausar Thompson stripped the ball cleanly and raced toward the loose ball, only to collide with Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen near the sideline. Thompson crashed to the floor while the clock expired, but officials swallowed the whistle and sent the game to overtime.

The Pistons erupted immediately.

Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff stormed onto the court in disbelief while Detroit players surrounded the officials arguing that Allen clearly tripped Thompson. Since the Pistons were already in the bonus, a foul would have sent Thompson to the free-throw line with a chance to win the game.

“He fouled Ausar. It’s clear,” Bickerstaff said after the game. “He trips him when he’s going for a loose ball. End of game situation, that’s tough.”

Cade Cunningham was equally frustrated.

“That’s a foul,” Cunningham said postgame. “It’s been a foul the whole game.”

NBA officials defended the decision afterward, explaining that the contact was considered incidental because both players were pursuing the ball. The explanation did little to calm Detroit fans, especially after ongoing complaints throughout the series about Cleveland’s free-throw advantage.

While the officiating controversy will dominate headlines, Detroit’s late-game collapse also proved impossible to ignore.

After Tobias Harris drilled a massive three-pointer to give the Pistons a nine-point lead late in regulation, Detroit completely stalled offensively. The Cavaliers tightened defensively, forced difficult possessions, and suddenly looked like the more composed team under pressure.

Mitchell struggled for stretches during the game but delivered when Cleveland needed him most. The superstar guard scored key baskets in overtime and helped the Cavaliers open the extra period with a 9-2 burst that stunned the Detroit crowd.

Mobley quietly produced one of the best all-around playoff performances of his career. The All-Star forward finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and several momentum-shifting defensive plays during Cleveland’s comeback. Strus added relentless energy on both ends while Jarrett Allen recorded a double-double despite becoming the center of the controversy afterward.

Detroit’s defensive identity disappeared late, and Cunningham’s brilliance ultimately went wasted.

The Pistons superstar delivered another postseason masterpiece with 39 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds while carrying Detroit offensively for most of the night. Cunningham repeatedly attacked Cleveland’s defense and looked poised to push the Pistons within one win of the conference finals.

Detroit also received an unexpected spark from Daniss Jenkins, who started in place of injured sharpshooter Duncan Robinson and scored 19 points in one of the biggest games of his young career.

Instead of celebrating, the Pistons now face elimination.

The loss continued a troubling trend late in the series. Cleveland has now won three straight games after Detroit initially grabbed momentum earlier in the matchup. The Cavaliers finally earned their first road playoff victory of the postseason and now return home with all the pressure shifted squarely onto the Pistons.

For Detroit, the defeat felt especially cruel considering the franchise’s historic Pistons comeback earlier in the playoffs. Cunningham had transformed into a legitimate playoff superstar, the Pistons had rediscovered belief, and the city was dreaming about its deepest postseason run since 2008.

Now the season hangs by a thread.

Game 6 shifts back to Cleveland on Friday night, where the Cavaliers will attempt to close out the Eastern Conference semifinal series and punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference finals. Detroit, meanwhile, must somehow recover emotionally from a collapse and controversial ending that may linger around the NBA long after this series ends.

Fans searching for the official box score were left stunned by how quickly the game turned in Cleveland’s favor during the final minutes.
