MOSCOW – Russian forces struck a 110 kV electrical substation in the Sumy Region on Sunday using Geran-4 drones, knocking out a number of facilities used by the Ukrainian armed forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The substation was located in the settlement of Dyakivka in the Sumy Region, according to the ministry’s statement. The Defense Ministry described the strike as targeting facilities used in the interests of Ukraine’s armed formations and released video footage of a Geran-4 Seeker drone striking what it called a military energy infrastructure facility.
The Sumy Region borders Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod oblasts and has been subject to regular strike activity during the Russian operation. Electrical substations in the region serve both civilian users and, in some configurations, military installations. The ministry’s characterization of the target as a military facility does not preclude civilian power supply impacts from a substation going offline; the statement did not address the broader effect on civilian infrastructure in the region.
The Geran-4 is a variant of the Geran loitering munition series used by Russian forces in strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Russia has escalated its drone campaign in recent weeks, with Euronews noting that jet-powered variants are now being deployed around the clock to saturate Ukrainian air defenses. The ministry has released footage of Geran strikes on Ukrainian energy targets in multiple oblasts as part of its regular operational reporting, while Russian officials have pledged that ground forces will clear the remaining Ukrainian fortified positions in Donetsk.
