HYDERABAD — Five of India’s six large defence stocks are lower on Tuesday morning. Bharat Dynamics is the exception, and it is the second exception in two sessions.
The missile maker was quoted at ₹1,378.50 on the National Stock Exchange at 11:49 IST, up ₹10.50 or 0.77 percent on Monday’s close of ₹1,368.00, and at ₹1,379.00 on the BSE. It opened at ₹1,363.00, below Monday’s close, and has since run to ₹1,393.70. Turnover of 12.76 lakh shares is 71 percent of an average full day, which extrapolates to about 1.7 times a normal session and is the heaviest relative turnover in this series after Steel Authority of India. These are live intraday figures from a session that settles at 15:30.
That combination is what makes the morning worth a paragraph rather than a line. On Monday, Bharat Dynamics rose 0.66 percent on 9.25 lakh shares, which is thin. On Tuesday it is rising harder on nearly four times that pace. Somebody is buying this stock deliberately, and they are doing it in a sector where everything else is being sold.

₹1,393.70 is the highest Bharat Dynamics has traded since August 18. It remains ₹26.10 below ₹1,419.80, the intraday high printed on results day, August 14, which the stock has not been able to retake in seven sessions.

| Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) | 4,850.70 | -1.13% | 0.74x |
| Live NSE intraday figures at 11:49 IST on August 25, 2026. Turnover pace compares shares traded so far against the average full-day volume of the past twenty sessions, extrapolated to a full session on a straight-line basis; morning trade is normally heavier than afternoon trade, so every figure reads high. Bharat Dynamics is both the only gainer and the only name trading materially above its normal pace. | |||
The two columns together are the point. It is not simply that BDL is up while the sector is down. It is that BDL is the only one of the six drawing above-normal turnover. Hindustan Aeronautics is falling on the lightest pace in the group and Bharat Electronics is treading water on 0.90 times. Those are stocks being left alone. This is a stock being bought.

What 96 Times Earnings Is Actually Buying
Set Bharat Dynamics beside its peers and the valuation stops looking like a growth premium and starts looking like something else.
| Company | Trailing P/E | Return on equity | Multiple per point of ROE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bharat Dynamics | 96.2 | 10.2% | 9.4 |
| Bharat Electronics | 48.6 | 27.4% | 1.8 |
| Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders | 35.8 | 29.2% | 1.2 |
| Hindustan Aeronautics | 35.3 | 24.0% | 1.5 |
| Trailing price-to-earnings and return on equity are Screener’s figures. The final column is the P/E divided by the return on equity, calculated by The Eastern Herald. It is a crude measure and assumes returns are comparable across companies with very different contract structures, which they are not exactly. It is nonetheless hard to look at a spread of 9.4 against 1.2 and call it a rounding difference. | |||
Bharat Dynamics earns the least of the four on equity and costs the most on earnings, by a distance that no adjustment closes. The defence of that multiple is the order book, and it is a real defence. Nobody else in the sector has eleven years of visible work at the current run rate, and the missiles in the book are ones the Indian armed forces genuinely need and cannot source elsewhere at scale. Demand is not the question.
Delivery is. Bharat Dynamics has had a decade of order intake outrunning its ability to convert, and the June quarter was the first in a while where the conversion rate looked like it might be turning. Revenue of ₹572.24 crore against ₹247.93 crore a year earlier is up 130.8 percent, and net profit of ₹118.79 crore against ₹18.35 crore is up 547.5 percent. Both of those percentages are calculated against a base quarter that was close to nothing, which is why the stock is lower now than it was the day they were published.

| NSE closing prices and volumes; the final row is live intraday and not a close. The ₹1,419.80 intraday high on results day has not been revisited. Tuesday is the fourth consecutive session higher and the first of the four on above-average turnover. | |||
Four sessions up in a row now, from ₹1,317.00 on August 20 to ₹1,378.50, which is a recovery of ₹61.50 or 4.7 percent. The first three of those came on turnover between 9 and 22 lakh shares, all of it below the twenty-session average. Tuesday is the first that has arrived on heavier trade than usual, which is the sort of detail that separates a bounce from a bid.
Above, ₹1,393.70 is Tuesday’s ceiling and ₹1,419.80 the level from results day. Below, ₹1,361.00 is the morning’s low and ₹1,308.20 the August 20 low that ended the post-results slide.
What this article cannot resolve is whether the September quarter carries the Astra revenue the market has been waiting for. Bharat Dynamics gave no forward guidance with its June numbers, which for a company sitting on ₹26,176 crore of confirmed orders is a conspicuous silence. Nor has anything been announced that would explain a buyer arriving on Tuesday specifically. The order book is not in doubt. The rate at which it turns into money is the only thing that has ever been in doubt at this company, and one quarter and one busy morning have not settled it.
Elsewhere in Tuesday’s session, Hindustan Zinc was the market’s steepest faller and Tata Consultancy Services gave back an opening rise built on its Porsche acquisition. The Nifty 50 was down 0.32 percent.
Bharat Dynamics’ June-quarter figures are drawn from the results the company published on August 14, 2026. Intraday prices and the scrip identifiers were checked against the exchange’s own quote page for scrip 541143.
