Sensex Falls 377 Points on August 31 as $90 Oil Revives Inflation Fears

Oil tops $90 on Iran tensions as Adani, ITC and IT stocks bear the brunt; HDFC Bank and Tech Mahindra hold ground in the final session of August

MUMBAI – The pump price of petrol in Delhi crossed ₹114 a litre on Monday morning, and by the closing bell on August 31, the broader market had done the arithmetic. When Brent crude clears $90 a barrel and stays there, Indian equities do not hold.

The BSE Sensex fell 376.96 points, or 0.49 per cent, to close at 76,887.55, capping August as the third consecutive month of decline for Indian benchmarks, the longest negative streak since October 2023. The NSE Nifty 50 shed 146.20 points to settle at 24,029.45. The day’s sell-off was set in motion overnight when renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran stoked fears that the world’s fourth-largest crude oil consumer was heading into a period of sustained cost pressure it would struggle to absorb.

The slide was not uniform. Technology, metals, real estate and energy stocks absorbed the heaviest selling, while private-sector banks and automobile companies posted fractional gains, a rotation suggesting traders were differentiating between businesses exposed to global input costs and those driven by domestic credit and consumer demand that has, so far, held through three months of elevated fuel prices.

Adani Enterprises led the Nifty losers, falling 2.7 per cent on above-average volume, the stock’s sharpest single-session decline in six weeks. Adani Ports shed 2.41 per cent. The group’s infrastructure and commodity-logistics exposure sits squarely in the firing line when oil uncertainty disrupts global shipping cost models, and Monday’s session reflected that exposure without subtlety. ITC, which had held firm for most of August, gave up 1.6 per cent on what appeared to be a foreign-portfolio rebalancing away from consumer-defensive names.

Tech Mahindra stood apart as the session’s most significant outlier, gaining 2.38 per cent after the market absorbed details of a multi-year managed services contract awarded by a European financial institution. The contract size was disclosed; the implementation timeline was not, leaving analysts to model the revenue trajectory from first principles. Eternal, the food delivery and quick-commerce platform formerly known as Zomato, added 0.49 per cent, extending a quiet post-rebranding drift that has now accumulated across seven consecutive sessions.

HDFC Bank rose 1.87 per cent, its third consecutive positive close, as investors rotated into private-sector lenders ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy review on September 11. Axis Bank gained 0.82 per cent. Mahindra and Mahindra added 1.08 per cent, lifted by July wholesale dispatch numbers showing passenger vehicle sales at monthly records, performance that the India auto sector Q1 FY27 analysis had attributed to a structural shift in urban consumer preferences toward premium SUVs. Nestle India rose 0.58 per cent, reflecting the counterintuitive dynamic in which food inflation benefits companies with inelastic demand in their core categories.

The Nifty IT index fell 1.79 per cent, the fourth decline in five sessions, as TCS shed 2.08 per cent and Infosys dropped 2.20 per cent following the Nasdaq’s overnight fall tied to a soft US consumer confidence reading. In its end-of-day data, the NSE recorded approximately 2.4 declining stocks for every one that advanced. Nifty Metal fell 2.30 per cent on slowing Chinese industrial demand and persistent global steel overcapacity. Nifty Realty shed 1.89 per cent; developers remain among the most rate-sensitive names, and the oil-inflation dynamic threatens to hold the RBI’s easing cycle in place precisely when that sector most needs relief.

No resolution to the US-Iran confrontation was visible as market participants squared their books at the close. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed a second strike on a Red Sea logistics node late Sunday; the US National Security Council said it was assessing the situation without specifying a response timeline. Crude oil has now closed above $90 a barrel for three consecutive sessions. What that means for India’s import bill, its current account, and ultimately the RBI’s September calculus is a calculation that no major brokerage, as of Monday’s close, had settled into a firm number.
