LONDON — Stephen Fleming wanted Michael Hussey. Eighteen years of trust, built across Indian Premier League seasons at Chennai Super Kings, carried enough weight that England’s newly appointed Test head coach went directly to his longtime ally when he began assembling his support staff. Hussey said no.
The 51-year-old former Australia batter has instead signed a flexible part-time consultancy arrangement with Cricket Australia, stepping back from the full-time international coaching circuit at the precise moment Fleming needed him most. The rejection redraws England’s path into the 2027 Ashes. It almost certainly means Marcus Trescothick.
The vacancy left by Hussey’s decision points in a single direction. Trescothick, who has been serving as caretaker batting coach through England’s ongoing Test series in Pakistan, has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the permanent role. Nobody has confirmed that appointment on record. Nobody in the England camp has said whether Trescothick wants the job permanently or prefers the freedom of a caretaker brief. But the logic is plain enough: the preferred candidate is signed elsewhere, the incumbent is performing quietly and competently, and England has an Ashes series to prepare for in eighteen months.
The reasons Hussey gave for declining were not complicated, according to Yahoo Sports. A full-time batting coach appointment would require him to walk away from his head coaching role at Welsh Fire in The Hundred, give up his Fox Cricket broadcasting commitments, and spend English winters on tour while his family remained in Perth. Cricket Australia’s consultancy offers none of those sacrifices. It is part-time, flexible, and keeps him on the broadcast desk and inside the franchise ecosystem he has built since his Test retirement in 2013.
What made the rejection sting was the particular weight of the Fleming-Hussey relationship. The two men spent the better part of two decades playing at the Chennai Super Kings, where their professional shorthand became almost private in its fluency. When Fleming took the England job in late July 2026, replacing Brendon McCullum amid a broader coaching restructure, his first instinct was to rebuild with people he trusted. Hussey was the first call.
That call was answered and then declined. The instinct was sound; the timing was not. Hussey’s commitments had already crystallised in a way that made a full-time England role structurally impossible without upending the life he had built outside Test cricket. At 51, that is not a sacrifice most men make for someone else’s project, however much they respect the man running it.
Trescothick carries a particular credibility for this role that has nothing to do with coaching qualifications. He was one of the architects of England’s 2005 Ashes victory, the series that ended Australia’s 16-year grip on the urn and remains the gravitational centre of English cricket’s recent golden era. That history does not make him a better technical coach than anyone else with sharp eyes and a solid method. But it means he understands what winning the Ashes actually demands of a batter. Technique can be taught. The particular pressure of batting at Edgbaston or Old Trafford with the series on the line is different knowledge, and Trescothick has it from the side that matters.
His caretaker tenure has coincided with England’s Test series in Pakistan, where the batting order is navigating subcontinental conditions with little bearing on what they will face in Australia. Whether his influence has been meaningful or marginal in that environment is not clear from outside. What England’s management will be assessing is whether the batters trust him with the conversations that matter: the technical ones after a bad day in the nets, not the press conference ones.
Fleming’s record since arriving at the England post suggests he is not sentimental about personnel decisions when results demand otherwise. His approach to the Pakistan squad overhaul ahead of the Edgbaston Test showed that. The batting coach search carries the same pragmatic logic. Hussey was the ideal. Trescothick may be the right.
What matters to Fleming, and to English cricket more broadly, is whether the man who eventually takes the role permanently can prepare a top order for Australian conditions inside eighteen months. The 2027 Ashes will arrive quickly. The decision on who coaches England’s batting toward them will need to come well before the squad announcement.
This transition also points to the structural bind that faces international coaching in the franchise era. The best batting minds in world cricket are spread across IPL teams, The Hundred, the BBL and a web of broadcasting contracts that pay well and demand relatively little travel. Luring any of them back into full-time international work requires not just money but a willingness to give up the life those franchises enable. Hussey was not willing. The list of candidates who would be is shorter than it appears.

The men’s setup is still finding its shape under Fleming. Who takes the batting brief permanently will go some way to defining what that shape becomes.

Whether it is substantial enough to keep him meaningfully engaged with the national programme, or simply a flexible arrangement that preserves a relationship without demanding too much, is not yet clear. What is clear is that England will build their 2027 Ashes batting strategy without the man Stephen Fleming first picked.
