Frankfurt sees good potential for densification

Frankfurt – Main – According to the city administration, there are good opportunities for re-densification in Frankfurt. “We have determined that by 2030 we have a potential for 70,000 to 90,000 apartments in the urban area,” said Planning Director Mike Josef (SPD). 60 percent could be built in the course of re-densification. In 2019, according to departmental information, 312 apartments were made possible in the area of attic expansion and top floor additions. A total of 86 percent of all requested attic extensions were approved.

The owner association Haus & Grund Hessen, on the other hand, criticizes the bureaucratic hurdles that often exist. The processing of building applications would often take far too long. In addition, a fee for parking spaces must be paid in cities like Frankfurt.

As a prime example of re-densification, the city is happy to present the Platensiedlung, where 650 apartments are currently being created through the addition and construction of transverse buildings.
