WORMS – Students of applied computer science are busy cleaning sensors over the roofs of the Weststadt. The tower of the Lutherkirche rises in the background, next to it the Worms water tower. The sensors are part of the university’s weather station and measure not only temperature but also values such as air humidity, UV radiation and the amount of rain. These values have been available on the website https://wetter.hs-worms.de since 2007. Later, a webcam was added that gave interested people a view of Worms.
Now it was time for an extensive “spring cleaning”. Under the expert guidance of the house technology, a small group of students and lecturers entire roof of the computer science building to clean sensors and replace the now defective webcam.
But not only was cleaning and tidying up on the roof: changes were also made in the server room, even if they are not visible. The aim is to increase the system’s reliability and to bring it up to date. The logic of the system has also been changed in order to adapt it to the latest technical possibilities. In the future, it should be possible to correctly output the speed of wind gusts. Since only one wind speed value was saved per minute, gusts were not recorded. That’s going to change.
For fans and end-users, the most obvious change will be the new design of the website. This has been carefully optimized to maintain the clarity and clarity of the old website and at the same time to convert it into a current design. The young team is pleased to have implemented an attractive improvement in terms of user-friendliness and to be able to present a clear view of the Worms weather to interested citizens again.
