Lancet article on hydroxycloroquine withdrawn

January 21, 2021

Three of four authors of major research articles published in the prestigious Lancet medical journal that raised concerns about the safety of the use of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for the coronavirus have today withdrawn the article.

The data used in the study, which included information about those who were infected with the virus, has been criticized in recent weeks. Dozens of scientists have come forward and said they questioned the reliability of the data.

One of the four authors, Sapan Desai, who runs the company Surgisphere, which provided the data, did not participate in retracting the article.
