Polish troops began setting up a fence on the border with Belarus today, while the largest eastern member of the European Union is taking steps to curb illegal border crossings.
The EU claims that Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is waging a “hybrid war ” using migrants to put pressure on the Union over the sanctions it has imposed, and the construction of the wall is part of Poland’s efforts to boost border security on the east side of the EU.
– Almost 3 kilometers of the fence have been erected since yesterday.
– Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter, adding that almost 1,800 soldiers support the border guard.
Poland says Belarus is responsible for the migrants. The prime minister said this week that Minsk had rejected a convoy of humanitarian aid offered by Poland.
