Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Sudanese Prosecution: The coup attempt is a “criminal act”

On Tuesday, the Public Prosecution Office in Sudan described the coup attempt against legitimacy, the constitution, and transitional institutions as a “criminal act.”

This came in a press release of the Public Prosecution, of which Anadolu received a copy.

The statement said: “The Public Prosecution condemns the coup attempt against legitimacy, the constitution, and transitional institutions, and considers it a criminal act that threatens citizens’ aspirations and hopes for a decent life.”

The prosecution indicated that it will be an impenetrable dam to protect the transitional period and the constitution, “and will not hesitate to deter anyone if they take a path that violates the law, undermines the constitution and endangers the lives of others.”

On Tuesday, Sudanese television announced a coup attempt, calling on the people to “confront it,” hours before the army issued a statement, in which it affirmed, “the coup attempt has been thwarted and the situation completely under control.”

Meanwhile, Sudanese Defense Minister Lieutenant-General Yassin Ibrahim revealed, in a press statement, that the leader of the coup attempt is Major General Abdul-Baqi Al-Hassan Othman Bakrawi, along with 22 other officers of different ranks, and a number of non-commissioned officers and soldiers.

On April 11, 2019, the army leadership dismissed Omar al-Bashir from the presidency (1989-2019), under the weight of popular protests that began in late 2018, denouncing the deteriorating economic conditions.

Since August 21, 2019, Sudan has been living a 53-month transitional period that ends with elections in early 2024, during which power is shared by the army, civilian forces and the armed movements that signed the peace agreement.
