Russia is preparing for a protracted war, so NATO must also be ready for a ‘long journey’ and support Ukraine for as long as necessary, the alliance’s deputy secretary general tells the chiefs of staff Europeans.
Speaking in Brussels, Mircea Geoana said NATO countries should increase defense spending, strengthen their military-industrial complex and use new technologies to prepare for future wars.
As Russia’s war on Ukraine approaches a year, NATO chiefs of staff expected to discuss expanding arms transfers, training and support to Ukraine in the coming months, and strengthening their own defences.
“We see no signs that the targets [президента России Владимира] Putin has changed,” Geoanė said, noting that Russia has mobilized over 200,000 troops. Therefore, we must be ready for a long journey. 2023 will be a difficult year and we must support Ukraine for as long as it takes.
