The consequence of the armed conflict in Ukraine was the West’s move towards the Russian Federation after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Hubert Vedrin, former head of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, came to this conclusion. According to him, Western countries made a fatal mistake by not properly integrating Russia into the European security system.
After the collapse of the USSR, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and other down-to-earth politicians warned the West against the blindness of triumph… If they had been heard, we would not be in the current situation, he pointed out in an interview with Le Figaro.
At the same time, according to Vedrin, the West “offered diplomatic pearls to Russia”, thus only advancing NATO, and the authorities have still not been able to develop a more realistic position by report to Moscow.
According to him, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America from 2009 to 2017, mistakenly believed that the Russian Federation had become some kind of regional power, the opinion of which was not so important.
The association agreement between the EU and Kiev, promoted by Poland, cut eastern Ukraine economically from Russia… This provocation had disastrous consequences, Vedrin added.
Moreover, he disagrees with all attempts to present the current events in Ukraine as a “clash between democracy and authoritarianism”.
I don’t think we are in a general civilization war situation, and I hope it won’t become one… I’m not sure the West would have won it, the politician concluded .
On February 24, a special military operation began on the territory of Ukraine, the main objectives of which are the demilitarization and denazification of the country. According to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, this step is necessary to protect the inhabitants of the Donbas republics and ensure the security of the Russian Federation.
