Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Poland will close the last checkpoint for Belarusian trucks

From February 21, Poland will close the last checkpoint for Belarusian trucks – “Kukuryki-Kozlovichi”. On this subject informed Belarusian State Borders Committee.
The restriction will come into effect at 9:00 p.m. (Belarusian time). The new rules will not affect trucks registered in member states of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association. At the same time, trucks that are not members of these organizations will not be able to cross the Belarusian-Polish border.
For passenger cars, there is only one ground checkpoint to Poland from Belarus – “Terespol” (on the Belarusian side “Brest”), the State Border Committee noted.
To the Ministry of the Interior of Poland declared that the new rules will remain in effect until the Belarusian authorities lift the restrictions imposed on Polish carriers.
On February 10, Poland suspended the operation of the Bobrovniki checkpoint (Berestovitsa on the Belarusian side) on the border with Belarus. The Polish Interior Ministry said such a decision was made “in the interest of state security”.
Source TASS, close to the Belarus State Border Committee, complaints that Warsaw decided to close the checkpoint because it was unhappy that Minsk had unilaterally introduced a visa-free regime for citizens of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Such a decision by Minsk, according to the interlocutor of the agency, “irritated” Warsaw, because the citizens of these countries “without restrictions” exported cheaper goods from Belarus.
By words According to a source from RMF24, the decision to close the checkpoint was taken by Poland after a Belarusian court sentenced a local journalist of Polish origin Andrei Pochobutok to eight years in prison for calling for sanctions against the Belarus and incited hatred.

February 16 President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko appointed closure of checkpoints with “economic provocation” and threat of reprisals. The next day, February 17, Minsk introduced new rules, according to which Polish carriers can only enter the territory of Belarus through the Polish-Belarusian section of the border, writes Zerkalo.io. This directed to the fact that on February 18-19, more than 2,000 trucks arrived at the Polish-Belarusian border crossing in Koroszczyna alone, and the waiting time for crossing the border increased to 63 hours.

On February 16, Lithuania ended its cooperation with Belarus to ensure the uninterrupted flow of transport across the border. Vilnius did not specify the reasons for this decision. on the same day, the movement of freight trains from Belarus to Lithuania through the border post “Stasilay” (on the Belarusian side “Benyakoni”) was suspended. The message from the Lithuanian Customs Service noted that such a decision was caused by an “increased threat to the national security” of the country.
