To help German military instructors who train the Ukrainian army in the operation of German tanks and Western weapons, instructors from Norway and the Netherlands will be added. This was announced on Wednesday by the head of the Special Training Command (STC), Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow. According to him, “we are talking about 30 to 50 Norwegian soldiers and several hundred from the Netherlands”.The STC is headquartered in the town of Strausberg, near Berlin, and is part of the European Union military mission, created in November 2022 to train some 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers to operate NATO-standard equipment. .
Courses in various European countries range from basic military training to the use of modern battle tanks, air defense systems, rocket launchers and howitzers. In Germany, about 1,500 soldiers currently form the Ukrainian army. Their goal is to retrain at least 9,000 Ukrainians by the end of 2023.
Another large training center is located in Poland, and separate courses are held in Spain, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Italy. In addition to the EU mission, US and UK militaries are separately training Ukrainian militaries in Europe.
Against the background of the discussions of recent months on the supply of modern Western tanks to Ukraine, the German military emphasizes the importance of training Ukrainian specialists for the competent operation of all types of weapons supplied in conditions of fight. In this, NATO sees the advantage of training its troops over the Russian military which, according to NATO experts, relies on strength based solely on the number of troops and weapons.”We view tanks and infantry fighting vehicles as inseparable brothers who go into battle together, supported by artillery, air defense systems and other weapons,” Marlow said, noting that a tank operating alone is vulnerable to infantry attacks with anti-tank weapons.
Marlow also specifically noted that he was impressed with the intelligence, skill and dedication of the Ukrainian military.
