Finland’s NATO membership increases the threat of direct conflict between nuclear powers, Russian Ambassador to Belgium Alexander Tokovinin said.

Speaking on the Russia-24 TV channel, he stressed that the alliance has decided to continue escalating confrontation in relations with Russia, and called this a strategic mistake by Brussels.

“It’s a line that, unfortunately, leads to an increase in the threat of a direct confrontation between the nuclear powers,” Tokovinin said.

According to him, the EU policy of building security not together, but against Russia, is also nothing but a strategic mistake. The diplomat said that history knows no successful examples of such a course.

On April 4, Finland officially became a member of NATO. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken attended the country’s formal entry into the alliance. He accepted the country’s accession protocols ratified by the other members of the alliance.
