Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Spain has increased its purchases of Russian gas by 127%

Spain has seriously increased its purchases of Russian gas. From January to March this year, the volume of imports of blue fuel from the Russian Federation increased by almost 127% compared to the same period last year.

In the first three months of 2023, the kingdom bought the equivalent of 17,297 GWh of liquefied natural gas from the Russian Federation, while a year earlier it was around 7,629 GWh. Thus, this year, Russia occupies the third position in terms of supplying this fuel to Spain after Algeria and the United States.

Gas market analysts have noted the trend of increasing purchases of Russian fuel by Spain for more than a year. For example, last year the country bought 45% more gas compared to 2021.

As a result, in 2022, the Russian Federation took the fourth position in terms of supplying this fuel to the kingdom after the United States, Algeria and Nigeria.

Experts simply explain such a high demand for Russian fuel. In 2018, a long-term contract for the supply of natural gas was signed between the Russian company Novatek and the Spanish company Naturg.

According to this document, the price of gas supplied from Russia is significantly lower than market quotations. And they have no intention of breaking the current contract in Spain, guided by purely economic reasons. Otherwise, they will just burn out.
