AMD Commits $5 Billion to Anthropic in AI Chip Partnership Targeting 2 Gigawatts

SANTA CLARA — Advanced Micro Devices committed up to $5 billion in a strategic equity investment in Anthropic on Tuesday, deepening a partnership that will see the artificial intelligence company deploy as much as 2 gigawatts of AMD’s latest Instinct MI450 series processors, positioning the chipmaker as the most visible challenger to Nvidia’s dominance in AI hardware.

The announcement, made jointly by both companies, covers a multi-year engineering collaboration to optimize Anthropic’s Claude models for AMD hardware and accelerate development of the ROCm software stack. The first gigawatt of compute capacity is scheduled to go live in the first half of 2027, running on AMD Helios rack-scale systems equipped with MI455X GPUs, EPYC “Venice” processors, and Pensando networking fabric.

“This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing,” said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and chief executive.

Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, said the company needed more than capital to stay competitive. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” he said.

The deal is notable as much for its structure as its scale. AMD is not merely selling chips to Anthropic but acquiring an equity position in the company, aligning the chipmaker’s financial returns directly with Claude’s commercial success. Anthropic has raised more than $10 billion from investors including Google and Amazon; it has not disclosed a post-deal valuation, and AMD has not specified the ownership stake its $5 billion will represent.

That absence of detail is not incidental. Anthropic’s implied private valuation has been cited in several ranges over the past 18 months, and the mark-to-market value of AMD’s stake will ultimately depend on how those figures resolve, whether through a public offering or a fresh funding round. The deal memo, as released, does not address those mechanics.

What the announcement does specify is the compute commitment. Deploying 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI455X accelerators across Helios systems rivals the largest announced GPU buildouts in the industry. Each Helios rack integrates the MI455X with EPYC Venice server chips and Pensando data processing units, mirroring Nvidia’s DGX platform strategy: hardware, networking, and software sold as a single compute environment rather than disaggregated components.

Anthropic is not starting from zero with AMD silicon. The company already uses MI355X GPUs for portions of its workload, giving Tuesday’s announcement a practical foundation that distinguishes it from partnerships announced and later stalled for software compatibility reasons. AMD confirmed the full partnership terms in a joint press release Tuesday morning.

For AMD, the strategic rationale is direct. Nvidia holds roughly 80 percent of the market for AI accelerators, by most industry estimates, and its CUDA software platform has accumulated switching costs built over nearly two decades of adoption. AMD has repeatedly argued that ROCm can close the technical gap. Tuesday’s deal, funded with up to $5 billion, is the most concrete version yet of that argument: AMD will invest in optimizing Claude’s workloads for its hardware rather than wait for developers to migrate on their own.

The partnership also extends AMD’s footprint at the moment Anthropic is most aggressively diversifying its silicon supply. Anthropic’s talks with Samsung on a custom 2-nanometer AI chip, reported earlier this month, signaled that the company was moving to reduce dependence on any single supplier. A committed gigawatt-scale AMD deployment adds a second pillar to that strategy.

For Anthropic, the compute arrangement is partly a hedge. The company’s exposure to Nvidia hardware, like that of nearly every frontier AI developer, has left it subject to Nvidia’s allocation priorities and pricing power. Locking in 2 gigawatts of AMD compute from a supplier now invested in Anthropic’s success provides a degree of supply security that a standard purchase agreement cannot replicate.

The AMD deal follows a period of significant legal and financial activity for Anthropic. Last week, a federal judge approved Anthropic’s $1.5 billion copyright settlement, clearing a significant legal exposure as the company now takes on a compute commitment of a different scale with AMD.

The ROCm software effort is where most technical uncertainty concentrates. AMD’s software ecosystem has historically trailed Nvidia’s CUDA libraries, which are embedded in the toolchains, frameworks, and optimization pipelines that AI researchers use daily. Optimizing Claude’s training architecture for MI455X hardware is a scoped problem that AMD and Anthropic’s engineers can plausibly address. Broadening ROCm’s coverage to match CUDA across the full field of AI research is a longer undertaking.

The H1 2027 deployment window adds supply-chain uncertainty. AMD has improved its execution record considerably under Dr. Su, but advanced packaging at gigawatt GPU scale introduces manufacturing variables that the press release does not address, and the industry has a long record of announced compute timelines slipping by a quarter or more.

AMD separately said it would integrate Claude into its own engineering and product development workflows, making Anthropic’s model its primary AI assistant platform. It is the most explicit commitment any major chipmaker has made to a single AI provider, reflecting the degree to which the AMD-Anthropic relationship is built to be mutual: AMD as Anthropic’s infrastructure partner, Anthropic as AMD’s most prominent developer reference.
