Julian Assange’s wife said he was suffering increasingly from prolonged detention in Belmarsh, a maximum security prison in London. “His physical condition is deteriorating every day. This is exactly what happens when a person is locked up for up to 20 hours a day, visits are restricted and their health is abused,” said Stella Assange.
The United States accuses Assange of stealing, publishing and distributing classified documents on military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as endangering the lives of informants. His supporters see him as a courageous journalist who uncovered war crimes.
The legal tussle over Assange’s possible extradition to the United States has been going on for years. The British government has green-lighted the extradition in principle, but Assange and his supporters intend to use additional avenues of appeal.
