Zelenskyy signs ‘decolonization’ law banning geographical names linked to Russia

The President of Ukraine signed the bill on decolonization. It provides for a ban on the appropriation of geographical objects associated with Russia and the USSR. Previously, the bill was approved by the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the text of the document, it is forbidden to assign names to geographical objects that “exalt, perpetuate, propagate or symbolize Russia” or its sights. The ban also applies to those who have shown “aggression against Ukraine” or who have persecuted opposition representatives.

The removal of monuments related to Soviet history and the renaming of cities and streets in Ukraine began actively in 2015, after the adoption of the law on decommunization. For 8 years in Ukraine, more than nine hundred settlements and about 50,000 streets have changed their names. Recently, the persecution by the Ukrainian authorities has already descended on everything related to Russia.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the Ukrainian leadership has long pursued a policy of forced assimilation and aggressive de-Russification.
