Former Slovak prime minister and current parliamentary opposition leader Robert Fico said he would stop arms supplies to Ukraine and oppose anti-Russian sanctions if his party wins parliamentary elections. The politician said this in an interview with Bloomberg.
Robert Fico, whose centre-left political party (SMER) is leading in polls in Slovakia ahead of the September elections, has pledged to cut arms supplies to Ukraine. He also said he would veto “insignificant” sanctions against Russia that hurt European Union (EU) member states.
“I don’t want to supply Ukraine with deadly weapons just to look good in Western countries. We have the right to have our own opinion,” Fico said.
According to him, if he returns to the post, Slovakia will not support Ukraine’s application for NATO membership, because it is “the greatest absurdity” that will make the conflict global.
“The admission of Ukraine into NATO will mean the start of World War III,” Fico said.
Peace talks must take place now, before more people die, he said.
Earlier, former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Ukraine’s NATO membership can only be supported by those who really want a direct military confrontation between the West and Russia.
