Charles is due to be officially crowned king at Westminster Abbey in London next week in a ceremony attended by heads of state and foreign dignitaries, as he succeeds his mother, Queen Elizabeth, who died in september.
Charles and his wife Camilla will wear two sets of dresses for the coronation – formal scarlet dresses on arrival and royal purple dresses on departure – all of which were previously kept or made by 334-year-old London tailor Eddy & Ravenscroft .
Camilla’s formal dresses were originally designed for the late Queen Elizabeth.
Photos released by the palace showed members of the Royal School of Needlework working on a several-foot-long crimson velvet robe with gold lace trim that was to be worn by Charles.
Another photo showed her dress embroidered with her own symbol.
The palace continues to reveal details of the coronation ceremony, which will be smaller than Elizabeth’s coronation, but will still be full of pomp and grandeur, reflecting traditions dating back a thousand years.
