Secret peace ‘mission’ underway to help Ukrainian children: Pope Francis

Aboard the papal plane: Pope Francis has revealed a secret peace “mission” is underway to help Ukrainian children taken to Russia following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The pope did not give further details but said the Vatican was willing to help return Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war. While returning to the country from Hungary, Pope Francis said in a conversation with reporters in an airplane on Sunday, that ‘I am here to help’. There is a mission which is not public, on which work is going on, when it will be public, I will talk about it.

Pope Francis did not answer questions about whether he spoke with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban or a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Budapest this weekend about the peace initiative. Migration of Ukrainian children has been a matter of concern following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Pope Francis said that some prisoner exchanges have been mediated and that “whatever is possible” will be done to reunite the families.

In March, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s Children’s Commissioner, accusing them of war crimes for kidnapping children from Ukraine. Russia denies all such allegations and says they were removed for the safety of the children.
