Athens: Greece’s Supreme Court has given the green signal to a total of 36 parties, coalitions and independents to participate in the upcoming general elections on May 21, but the far-right National Party-Hellenes (Hellenes) is not allowed to contest. given. The National Party-Hellenes, founded by jailed ex-parliamentarian Ilias Kassidiaris, has been barred from contesting elections under a recently passed law, a news agency reported, citing Greek national news agency Amana. Accordingly, it bans the participation in the electoral process of parties whose top leaders have been convicted of offenses punishable with life imprisonment, such as running a criminal organisation.
Kassidiaris has been convicted of directing a criminal organization as a leading member of the extreme-right-wing Golden Dawn (Chrissy Avgi) party. Members of the Golden Dawn were also members of Parliament between 2012–2019. Its leadership and dozens of members were arrested in 2013 after the assassination of the anti-fascist musician, and were indicted in 2020.
