Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Russia: rising water threatens the Kakhovka dam and the Zaporizhya station

Rogov added that it would damage parts of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant under Russian control.

“If the dam collapses, the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant could also be in the flood zone, but the situation is still under control at the moment,” Rogov said.

He stressed that “the situation will be completely stabilized by stopping the shelling of the Kiev regime forces on the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station located in the Dnieper delta in the province of Kherson”.

It was reported earlier that the water level in the Kakhovka dam has reached a critical level, and the reason for this is the high water level and the uncontrolled discharge of water from hydroelectric power stations controlled by the Kiev authorities in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia, as well as the bombing of the Ukrainian side of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which It is located downstream of the Dnieper in Kherson.

An increase in the water level could lead to the collapse of the dam near the town of Kamenka-Dniprovskaya, flooding the surrounding areas.

Rinat Karcha, adviser to the managing director of Russian nuclear energy company Ross Energoatom, said that if the Nova Kakhovka dam cracks, water will flood the power line to the pumping stations of the Zaporizhya station.

“This (will create) technical problems for the operation of the plant and risks for nuclear safety,” he added.

And last November, after Russian forces withdrew from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, satellite images showed further extensive damage to the dam.

Both sides accused each other of planning to destroy the dam using explosives, which would flood most of the downstream area and could cause great destruction around Kherson.
