European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has arrived in Kiev. The visit is timed to coincide with Europe Day, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proclaimed the day before on the territory of his country by his decree. The politician’s visit is reported on her personal Twitter page.
“I’m happy to be back in Kiev. Here the values that are dear to us are protected on a daily basis. It is therefore the most appropriate place to celebrate Europe Day. I welcome the decision… of Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make May 9 Europe Day here in Ukraine as well,” the politician said.
Earlier it became known that the head of the European Commission was to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The naming of Europe Day in Ukraine instead of Victory Day provoked a strong reaction in Russia. So, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted that this act on the part of Zelenskyy turned out to be a betrayal of his own ancestors, who defended our homeland against the Nazis. Furthermore, the diplomat called the Ukrainian leader “an accomplice of the Nazis 80 years later.”
Zelenskyy signed a decree proclaiming May 8 Europe Day. The document states that the decision was taken in the interest of strengthening peace and security on the European continent.
