The New Zealand national airline has decided to offer a unique solution to its passengers, allowing them to “rent” a bed to sleep during the flight.

What is the nature of the new service?

“Air New Zealand” has announced that it will provide its passengers on board the eight new “Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner” aircraft with beds to sleep for 4 hours, in two-storey cabins that can accommodate 6 people, called “Sky nest”. . The beds are very close together but each has a curtain for some privacy for those sleeping on them. According to the company, each “cabin” will include a pillow, sheets and blanket, and these items will be changed between different users, 30 minutes between sessions. Air New Zealand said: “The lights will come on softly at the end of each session and the crew will politely wake sleeping passengers. The service is available for Economy Class passengers, who often struggle with tight spaces between seats. Bed reservations will only be available from September 2024.”

Conditions of “rental”

According to the airline, passengers will only be allowed to book one session per flight for a 4-hour period, and the bed can be used by one family member during the session, which means it is not cannot be alternated between its members.

The cabins will appear for the first time on long-haul flights, from Oakland to New York and from Oakland to Chicago, which last more than 15 hours.

The company’s eight new “Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner” planes will arrive in the country in 2024, according to British newspaper “The Guardian”.

Lianne Geraghty, Air New Zealand’s director of sales and customer service, called the new service “another example of the airline pushing the boundaries of what is possible”. In terms of pricing, she said: “We are still working out the details of how the booking process will work, and we have yet to say a price. At this stage, we are looking at around NZ$400-600. ($250 to $380) for 4 hours of sleep.” .
