A large activity of NATO transport aviation in the Baltic countries was noticed

May 12, 2023

Yesterday evening, the Flightradar24 service recorded increased activity of NATO military transport aviation in Eastern Europe. At least nine aircraft flew from Polish Krakow to airfields in Latvia and Estonia.

Most carriers are owned by the Polish Air Force, and at least one other aircraft is in service with the Czech Army. Also, during the day, a US Air Force tanker plane circles in the air, taking off from a military base in Germany.

These maneuvers are likely to be part of the NATO exercise Swift Response 23 which started on May 9.

According to the official portal of the North Atlantic Alliance, during the maneuvers, the operational transfer of personnel and equipment from the Allied countries to the eastern borders of NATO is being worked out. The main landing is planned at the Estonian airfield of Nurmsi.

The international exercise Swift Response 23 is taking place near Russia’s northwest borders until May 14 and is part of NATO’s largest Defender 23 exercise in Europe and exercise Anakonda 23 currently taking place in Poland.
