Agencies – Beijing:
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the Asia-Pacific region is outside the geographical scope of NATO and does not need an exact copy of it.
Wang’s statement at a regular press conference came in response to reports that Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg respectively confirmed in interviews that the two sides are discussing opening a NATO liaison office in Japan.
Wang said NATO has publicly stated on many occasions that it remains a regional alliance and does not seek geopolitical penetration. He added, “However, we have seen NATO constantly strengthening its relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific, bent on heading east to this region, interfering in regional affairs and instigating confrontation between the blocs. What does NATO really intend to do?
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that this calls for high vigilance among the countries of the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, adding that he hopes that the concerned parties will not undermine regional peace and stability just to achieve the so-called geopolitical interests.
Meanwhile, the world is watching closely whether Japan really seeks to lead NATO’s expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. He urged Japan to draw lessons from history, stay committed to the path of peaceful development, and avoid doing things that might shake confidence and affect peace and stability in this region.
