Erdogan wrote on Twitter: “The vote counting process continues, and any attempt to announce the results quickly is a violation of the national will.”
He called on his “opponents and friends” to stay close to the polls, whatever happens, pending the official announcement of the results.
Erdogan’s statements came in light of conflicting preliminary figures regarding the election results. While the government media shows his progress, the opposition media shows the progress of the candidate of the opposition “nation” coalition, Kamal Kilicdaroglu.
Preliminary results, according to the Anatolia news agency, indicated that Erdogan was leading the race, but the difference keeps narrowing in favor of his rival, Kilicdaroglu.
Kilicdaroglu wrote on Twitter ahead of Erdogan’s speech: “We are in the lead.”
Opposition leaders have said their candidate is leading in the preliminary results, qualifying him to be the country’s new president.
No significant events were recorded on polling day, as the overseeing body said, but tension overwhelmed candidates’ speeches after polling stations closed and vote counting began.
Both Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu have made statements calling for the protection of funds, which shows doubts on both sides.
